About Southern Star
Southern Star Fencing Academy exists to provide high-quality instruction in the modern Olympic sport of saber fencing. We introduce youth and adults to the sport through structured, individualized training that develops sound technique, tactical understanding, athletic ability, confidence, and personal discipline. We are intentionally small. Our success is measured by the development of our fencers, the quality of our coaching, and the culture we create - not by the size of our enrollment.
Our Mission
Our mission is to teach saber with patience, precision, and purpose. Every fencer receives a strong technical foundation, clear goals, and a meaningful path for improvement. We create an environment in which effort matters, discipline is expected, sportsmanship is practiced, and progress is earned one lesson at a time.
Our Vision
Our vision is to build a respected saber fencing program in Acadiana - one known for excellent instruction, responsible coaching, strong fundamentals, and fencers who carry themselves well both on and off the strip. Southern Star will grow deliberately. New programs, additional enrollment, and expanded competition opportunities will be introduced only when they can be supported without compromising safety, instructional quality, or individual attention.
How We Teach
Southern Star specializes exclusively in saber and is built around private instruction. Lessons follow a structured curriculum while remaining responsive to each student’s age, physical ability, experience, temperament, and goals. Students progress at an appropriate pace rather than being rushed through skills or measured against someone else’s timetable. We teach students not only how to perform an action, but how to understand when, why, and where it works.
What Success Means to Us
Success is not limited to medals, ratings, or tournament results. A successful fencer develops technical competence, tactical judgment, resilience, self-control, confidence, and respect for others. Competition can become an important part of that development, but it should be introduced when the student is ready, not because of pressure or an arbitrary timeline.
Some students will choose to compete. Others will fence for fitness, recreation, personal challenge, or the joy of learning the sport. ALL paths are worthwhile, and all are welcome at Southern Star.
Our Commitment to Safety
Physical and emotional safety come before convenience, competitive ambition, or business considerations. Training involving minor athletes follows applicable USA Fencing, FenceSafe, SafeSport, and athlete-protection requirements. Lessons are conducted in appropriate, observable, and interruptible environments, with clear professional boundaries and responsible communication.
Bullying, harassment, hazing, retaliation, discrimination, abuse, and deliberately unsafe conduct have no place at Southern Star.
Built One Fencer at a Time
Southern Star begins modestly, operates professionally, and grows deliberately. Limited size will never be treated as an excuse for weak standards, careless instruction, or poor organization. Our reputation is built the same way a fencer develops skill: through consistent work, close attention to detail, and one earned improvement at a time.

Coach/Owner
Igor Omerbegovic
I am a USA Fencing registered coach who has completed SafeSport training and maintains FenceSafe compliance. I have been coaching saber for three years and fencing competitively for six.
Remaining active in competition keeps my coaching connected to the realities of modern saber, from technical execution and tactical decision making to the mental demands of stepping onto the strip.
My coaching style is direct, detail-oriented, and analytical. I place a strong emphasis on technical fundamentals and want my students to understand not only how to perform an action, but when and why it works. My goal is to help each fencer develop sound technique, tactical awareness, confidence, and self-discipline without losing the enjoyment that makes people want to remain in the sport.
Coaching grew naturally from my own competitive experience and from a genuine enjoyment of teaching others.
I founded Southern Star Fencing Academy to help strengthen the saber community here in Acadiana and to give beginning fencers a clear, purposeful foundation from the very start, and a fencing environment in which they can grow into complete saber fencers.
